As Jane Jacobs said, the street is the city. As the most relevant part for any city construction the street places eyes in the street, generates continuity, constructs diversity, and performs as a landscape by itself. In this regard, the project aims to emulate the flexible and dynamic conditions of the city’s streets.
As any dynamic condition requires continuity in uses and space, the necessity for horizontality (or being connected to the ground as much as possible) in a limited space requires being as compact as possible. However, any attempt inevitably requires verticality. In order to maintain connectivity in a vertical space, the building performs as a continuous spiral structured by an inner core in which all the fixed functions of the library are located.
The difference between levels generated by the upward trend between the main areas of the library creates soft edges between uses and activities. The building aims to maximize flexibility without losing differentiation. By means of that, each function can set relations between separate/ connected parts of the project, perhaps increasing collaboration and work for the team.
Varna city library should be a space in which literature and arts meet society in an informal way. A library must be a space in which theory meets practice and vice versa.
